Cartograph Winery – 09 Floodgate Vineyard Pinot Noir

After deliberating over poetry titles I decided that they should be labeled as the original muse that inspired lyrical creation.  So here is one of my originals.

I buried my nose into her earthen bosom

While graciously receiving love from the dancing fruit kisses

Beholding the beauties of the tempters red cloak

She begged for conquest & exploration.

Her flavors playfully bound in the middle of my tongue

As a wave ready to crash on the shores of my anxious palate

Like a sun-kissed ocean the fruit glimmered & danced around

My eagerly adventurous exploration of tastes.

Swirling through my senses only led me to crave more from this sultry love affair.

The color – seductive,

The smell – inviting,

The flavor – enrapturing,

The love affair – began.

How it all began

I had grown up with wine around and gave it little attention.  As I grew older I’d tag along to wine tasting with family & friends, but was more interested in the cheese with brie to be quite honest.

So where was the turning point to create this insane wine passion that now coursed through my veins?  I blame two things…the mortgage downturn of 2007 that left me looking for work & the rock!  I know, I know…the rock.  Really.  Yes!

When the real estate industry started to slow I took it upon myself to start learning about gemstones & the art of making jewelry.  I felt the desire to fire up my artistic side that had hid dormant while the business of analytics was in high demand.  Nothing like taxes & mortgage loans to wear out the artistry!  I was overwhelmed with creative imagery & limited only by finance.   I tried to absorb as much information as I could through books, classes & fellow artists (geologists, gemologists, lapidaries, jewelers, & designers).

So in the scientific dive of creative passion I found a lovely crystal called Ametrine.  This member of the quartz family is the convergence of amethyst & citrine most often found in it’s natural form in Bolivia.  Some desired it so much that it was manipulated in labs & also by heating a portion of the amethyst crystal to cause it to turn yellow, thus creating a similar affect.  I’m blessed to have witnessed a few of these beautiful natural stones, but only one amazing specimen with rich colors.  It is rare finds like these that cause me to pause my quests of the many rare & just enjoy the moment with a special one…much the same with wine as you will find out later.

So there’s the rock!  Isn’t she beautiful!

Natural Ametrine with a 50/50 split.

Totally her fault for the wine affair because the new love of  science in earthen creation punched me hard in the head the next time I chose to go wine tasting.  Now I could taste the dirt!  This wine grape over here tastes different than this one over here.  This winemaker ages on skin to create this flavor, while this one creates the juice in stainless tanks instead of beautiful french oak barrels.  You can see where I’m going with this, I’m sure.

Needless to say my new affair for the past 4 years is diving into my love for the grape from vine to juice (than to big adult girl juice…and boy juice).  Just as before I’m reading, taking a few classes & chilling with the artist (winemakers, wine/food writers, vineyard owners, & fellow wine geeks).

I usually choose poetry as my outlet which is what I will try to focus on mostly,  but every once in awhile it’s nice to read a little story.  The core of all my pursuits is really laced in the wisdom of truly enjoying life to the fullest & in the coexistence with the best of people (sometimes the worst of people).  We all have our own voice, style, talents & moments to keep life full of peaked curiosity…hope you enjoy seeking & living with yours!
